H E President Mnangagwa commissioned Muchesu Mine
His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa commissioned Muchesu Coal Mine “Lubu Project on 31 July 2023”. 70% of Muchesu Coal Mine is owned by Contango Holdings Plc and the remaining 30% is held by supportive local partners. The project covers 19,236 hectares of the highly prospective Karroo Mid Zambezi coal basin, located in the Binga district in North-Western Zimbabwe.
H.E President Mnangagwa in his speech said, Government and the private sector, have a duty to ensure the modernisation, industrialisation and development of our motherland that leaves no one and no place behind. Hence, the various mining houses must always plough back into the communities in which they are operating in. He further highlighted that Government is fully supportive of the beneficiation and value addition thrust being undertaken in the Coal mining sector. Notable is the fact that local coke production has increased, with coke exports by 327% up from US$39 million in 2020 to US$166.4 million in 2022 as coke producing companies expand their operations.
