Resource Mobilisation Meeting for Tropical Cyclone Freddy Disaster Victims in Malawi, at State House
His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa attended the resource mobilisation meeting for tropical cyclone Freddy disaster victims in Malawi, at State House.
Tropical cyclone Freddy claimed over 300 lives and caused extensive damage to homes and social services infrastructure. Thousands of victims suffered injury and displacement, while the affected areas were rendered impassable.
In response to the International appeal for assistance by Malawian President Dr Lazarus Chakwera, Cabinet constituted a Disaster Relief Committee led by the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Honorable July Moyo, to draw up a comprehensive assistance package for disaster-stricken Malawi.
In an effort to widen the scope of donations to Malawi, Government encouraged the private sector, national institutions and citizens to donate.
Among the donations pledged included,
3 truckloads of cement from PPC Zimbabwe,
120 tonnes of cement from Khaya Cement Zimbabwe, 300 metric tonnes of Mealie meal and (anticipated 100 tonnes of sugar beans) from Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe, 5000 litres of Diesel from Economic Empowerment Group and
100 cubic metres of timber from the Timber Industry, among other donations.
